About the Project

GOONS Logo
The Kingman Name Study is also registered with the Guild of One Name Studies.

The Kingman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Kingman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Kingman name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Kingmans), by time period (18th Century Kingmans), or by topic (Kingman DNA, Kingman Occupations, Kingman Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Research Pages

Here are some of the current research projects on which we are working. Any help is more than welcome.

  • Connecting all the existing Kingman profiles on wikitree to their equivalent pages on the Kingman ONS website - the ONS website often contains more information than has been copied over into wikitree.
  • Seeking new contributors to our Y-DNA program. Getting people to join is not easy, but it can be really rewarding. In this case showing the link between the very large US Kingman family and the much smaller root family of Kingman in England.
  • Building the at-DNA database of Kingman descendants. This is very much work in progress and hopefully will help us fill in some gaps in the more recent Kingman family history where there is a lack of paper records.
  • Adding in more paper trail research to expand on the bare bones that are already here.

About the Kingmans

There are mulitiple origins of the Kingman surname, but they all appear to trace back to the West Country of England. Early records of the surname are very rare further west than Devon or further east than Wiltshire.

The families have spread across the world with a very large branch in the USA descending from Henry Kingman, who emigrated in 1635 to Weymouth, Massachusetts. He is widely said by many sources to have been born in Frome, Somerset, England. This assumption is not backed by any documentary evidence yet and is not in accord with the parish registers of Frome. However, Y-DNA evidence has now been found that points to a common ancestor between Henry's line and that of Thomas Kingman of Farrington Gurney, Somerset, who probably was born in Frome.

There is a dedicated website for this family name and similar names at Kin(g)(s)man ONS website.
